Trip to St. Petersburg Part 1

Two weeks ago I went to St. Petersbrug, the second biggest city of Russia. But before we arrived in Russia, we had quite a journey ahead of us. By us I mean over 50 exchange students from Rovaniemi who couldn´t wait to see the beauty of St. Petersburg.

The bus departed at 20:30 and arrived in Helsinki at 7:30. It was an exhausting night with almost no sleep, way to less space for my long legs and a seat next to the corridor, so no window to lean on. Due to that I couldn´t stop yawning the entire day :D. We had seven hours to kill until we had to check in for the ferry.

I wanted to see the “Underground Church” also known as “Rock Church”. A classmate of mine wanted to see it as well, so we headed of. When we arrived at the church (8:05) we realised that it wouldn´t open before 9 o´clock. Great I know. It was windy, I was tired and  there were no other attraction around, except two souvenir shops.

After wandering around for almost an hour we could finally enter the church, together with 30 Asians.

Temppeliaukio Church

Temppeliaukio Church is its real name. It is directly excavated into solid rock, has a glass cupola and a really unique atmosphere. The entrance ticket costs 3 euros and can be bought in the souvenir shop or directly in the church.

It took some time until I could take pictures without a bunch of Asians running through it. But we had a lot of time. So we were waiting a little, and I almost fell asleep.

From the church we walked towards the harbour and came across some things I had to take a picture of. For example, this little guy.

Something Finnish

Helsinki, Finland

If I will be in Helsinki again, I want to visit the National History Museum of the City. I just saw it from the outside, but these two giraffes drinking coffee and the rabbit wearing a top had looked really promising.

At the harbour I took 100 of seagull Pictures which I want to spare you. I just think seagulls are really pretty and graceful looking birds and every time I see one, I have to take a picture.

Helsinki Finland

Besides taking a lot of seagull pictures, we took a look inside the market halls, where I saw something I wish I would own. Those who know me are Aware that I LOVE kanelbullar (cinnamon buns). I could eat them every day all year around. When I saw this jar of kanelbullar, I was about to take it with me 😀

It looks not as big on the picture as it was in reality. I think it was the size of my upper body, from my hips all the way up to my head. Santa, if you are reading this, you know what to bring me for Christmas 😉

At 15:30 we could finally check in and enter the ferry, where I went strait to bed to take a long nap.

Off to St. Petersburg

St Petersburg is one of the places I always wanted to go to. Somehow it fascinates me, history, culture, architecture and everything else. I’ll show this to hubby, maybe we’ll manage to convince him together!

I can understand why you waited in the wind and cold for Temppeliaukio Church to open. Amazing how it was excavated from solid rock. I hope you got in some sleep after that.
