Places I want to go: Iceland

At the beginning of this year I made a bucket list, with things I want to see, do, or eat this year. There are many different to-do points, on of them is “travel around Iceland”

Iceland is a country of natural contrasts. You can find huge glaciers, intact volcanos, small fisher villages along beautiful fiords, and coastlines with black beaches, one place more magnificent and impressive than the other. This Island offers pitch winters and summer´s with midnight sun.
It is a place you must have seen!

How to travel around

For how long and how intense you want to discover Iceland is your choice. But however you decide, I am sure there is the right vehicle/transportation that suits your plans perfectly.

My personal favorite is the circle passport.

It is a bus ticket which you can use for almost four months to travel around Iceland. You hop off whenever you want, and hop back on when you have seen everything, filled your camera with 1.000th of Pictures and are ready to see the next amazing place.

This ticket costs 47000 isk which are about 383 euro and is valid between the 13th of June and 7th of September. You just have to decide if you want to travel clockwise or anticlockwise. Going back and forth is not allowed.

There are different bus routes you can choose from. Every route has at least one daily pickup. More popular and busy routes maybe more.

I think that is the perfect way to discover Iceland at your own pace. You don´t have to follow a tourguid, you can stay wherever and for how long you want. It is perfect for backpacking. And maybe a cheap way to discover the beauty of the Country of fire and ice.
I can picture myself doing that!

If you are no fan of busses you could rent a car.
There are plenty of websites that offer cars to rent, some with a travel packet.

Like the iceland circle tour.

You get a car for nine days, accommodation and breakfast for eight nights, GPs and other services. You can choose between the standards of the car and the hotel. The cheapest version is  available for 1147 euro if you travvel with a friend. The more people you are, the cheaper it gets.

I don´t like this as much as the first one because you are not that flexible due to your accommodations and the limited use of the car. But I still think it is a great option to travel around. You see places like Geysir, Reykjavik, Myvatn or Jökulsárlón.

If you want to just see the South or North you can choose a different tour, which might be cheaper. But I want to see as much as possible, so I chose this trip.

If you maybe just want to do a Weekend trip to Reykjavik or another City, but you still want to see some of the beautiful landscape you can book tickets or day trips.

bustravel.is offers such tickets and tours to particular destinations. They cost between 4990 isk  (40,76 Euro) and 29500 isk (240,98), depending on how long the trip is.

What to see:

  • Bláa Lónið (blue lagoon) a natural thermal bath near Reykjavík in the south of the Island
  • The golden circle or Strokkur Geysir
  • Jökulsárlón a glacial lake is the deepest lake of iceland
  • Dettifoss is the biggest waterfall in the north of Iceland with 44 meters
  • Landmannalaugar an amazing shaped area near the Hekal Vulcano
  • Vatnajökull Icelands biggest glacier
  • Skógafoss a 60 meter high waterfall
  • Húsavík a great place for whale watching
  • Vík í Mýrdal the most southern village in Iceland
  • Kirkjufell a funny shaped mountain
  • Skaftafell Ice Cave, Vatnajökull National Park a world of snow and ice

Which places would you visit when you travel to Iceland?

Or maybe you have been there and can give advices which places we must see.
