My expectation of Finland

In 43 days I will be on my to a country I have never been to. I will live and study in Rovaniemi for half a year. Rovaniemi is the capital of Lapland, which is the most northern region of Finland. I don´t know anything about Lapland, apart from that it is the home of Santa Clause.

I thought I would write down my expectations about the country and its people, which is the following:

The Country

I imagine Finland to be very similar to Sweden and Norway. Maybe with less lakes and mountains. So basically just forests, villages and a lot of snow, at least in winter times. Houses made out of wood, with a cozy fireplace inside.

The Weather

I know it can get pretty cold up there. A student who was in Finland last year said, they had up to -41 degrees. Every morning they had to remove the ice on their bikes with hot water or fire. (I am not so sure about the fire part, but maybe it´s true and finish people start their day with a small campfire around their bikes:D) Even if it gets that cold, I think it wound feel like -41 degrees. The coldest temperature I have experiences was about -25 degrees in Sweden. It was cold, but it didn´t feel freezing cold.

The People

I don´t know any prejudice about Finnish people. But I could imagine that they are friendly people, who like relaxing in the sauna, maybe drinking some vodka and don´t talk so much. But I have no idea if that´s true. I imagine them to care about their environment more like others. I don´t know why I am thinking that. I just believe Finnish people are in harmony with their nature.

The Food

Again, I think the food could be similar to some Swedish dishes. And I think they eat a lot of fish and reindeer. And something that keeps you warm during the cold winter. Maybe they drink a lot of tea. Oh, that would be great, I love a good cup tea!

The University

I know that our courses will be just for exchange students, which is quite sad, because I want to get to know some Finnish people. I guess I have to do that somewhere else.

They say the Finnish school system is the best in the world. So I am exited so see how different it will be compared to the german on. I know we are going to do a lot of group works and projects, which I really like. I would imagine the relationship between the students and teachers to be more fiendly.

Other things

I wonder what finish people do during the dark time of the year. When you have just two hours of daylight and the rest will be dawn and night. What do you do the entire day? Do they sit by the fire and playing board- or card games? We played a play in Primary school where one of the character´s hat do sit under a floor lamp for an hour, because Finnish people do that in winter. They called it light shower. Do hey really do that? I mean I could just google it, but I would like to find out when I´m in Finland.

You see, I don´t know much about the country I am going to visit. What do you think Finland will be like? Tell us in the comment section down below.

We will see which of mine and your expectations are right and which ones are completely bullocks.

  1. I can’t believe you’re going there for half of a year! What an adventure. It will be interesting to see how your expectations compare to what you will actually experience.
